Class Aims

We aim to provide a rich learning environment in which a willingness to become an active learner is fostered. We promote caring and empathy towards others. We foster independence and responsibility for one’s own actions. We identify and cater for the needs of each individual child, developing self-belief and the ability to succeed. We aim to develop competence in Key Learning Areas and to share and celebrate our successes in learning.

Curriculum Overview

The children will be involved in activities covering the Key Learning Areas of English, Maths, Physical Education, Health and Personal Development, Science, HSIE: History & Geography, Creative and Practical Arts. Technology is included in all learning areas where appropriate. Staff will continue to implement the new Australian curriculum this year.

Whole School Assembly: Wednesday at 2.00pm in the school hall.  Merit certificates, High Achievers awards and PBS awards are given out at this time. Parents are welcome to attend.


Reading involves modelled reading with big books, picture books, guided and independent reading as well as shared reading activities.

During Home Reading your child will bring home books that are at their independent level, books that they will have success with. These books will be changed daily and closely monitored by the class teacher. Please record comments in the journal and use this as a communication book for the class teacher. You can support your child by reading the text first and showing them how to point to each word. Your child can then copy, pointing to each word as they read. Encourage them to look at the illustrations to assist with meaning as well as the initial sound of an unknown word. Praise all attempts and reinforcing when they have read accurately. Ask your child some questions at the end of the reading to get them to recall the events of the story.

There is a big variation in what many of the children know and can do. This has a lot to do with readiness as well as what they have been exposed to. Here are some things you may consider doing at home to help your child. 

  • Identifying rhyming words in books and poems.
  • Making up rhyming words for names etc.
  • Saying and identifying letter names.
  • Saying and identifying letter sounds, starting with beginning sounds.
  • Reading worksheets with your child that they bring home.
  • Reading to and with your child.  This is a vital part of developing a love of reading and developing the flow of language  necessary in predicting text.  Particularly important is the discussion that goes with reading a story to your child so that they gain greater meaning from the story.
  • Be an example to your child by reading.

Premiers Reading Challenge     

Participation in the Premier’s Reading Challenge is encouraged in Stage 1. A sheet will be sent home with information at a later date. The Challenge runs from 6th March to 25th August. Stage 1 children are required to ‘read’ 30 books from the booklist to complete the challenge. A child can listen to the book or read part, or all, of a book independently, depending on their level of reading ability. We will read most of the books in class and library lessons. Parents can fill in the books that are read at home on the list and return to school to be entered on the website. School library books will be identified with a red and white sticker if they are included in the book list. All children who complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge will receive a PRC certificate and appear in PRC Honour Roll.  Only the students’ name will appear with no other identifying factors. 

Get Reading Right

Get Reading Right’ is a Phonics program that is built around Synthetic Phonics: Synthesising (blending) sounds to make words.

It’s quick – we do a group of sounds and start reading and spelling right away

- It’s thorough – all 44 sounds of the English language are taught

- It’s explicit – no guessing games for your child

- It’s systematic – grows in complexity as your child develops

- It’s consistent – always the same message about how to read and spell unknown words K-2

It’s efficient – teach both reading and spelling at the same time. This means there will be an increased rate of transfer of the skills between reading, writing and spelling.


Children are encouraged to write often paying attention to spacing, use known words and sounds. Parents can help by providing their children with many experiences in every day life. This gives children a wealth of things to talk and write about.  Giving children practical writing tasks such as making a shopping list or writing a letter or email to a family member makes it a meaningful authentic task.


Maths involves the manipulation of materials to improve concepts and language of number, spatial awareness and measurement. We will use games and activities aimed at teaching children efficient number strategies within ability based groups.

Some of the activities we will be doing:

  • Sorting objects according to size, shape and colour and any combination of these.  
  • Use and understand terms like daytime, night time, yesterday, tomorrow, after, behind next to, under, over, near, far etc.
  • Using the days of the week, dates and months of the year.
  • Recognise, describe and create repeating patterns and number patterns
  • Count backwards and forwards.
  • Recognize and write numbers.
  • Group, share and count collections of objects.
  • Use the term o’clock and read the time.
  • At home children can read and write numbers, play dice and cards games, look for patterns in things around them etc.

Growth Mindset & Assessment
This year we will continue working on developing a growth mindset with our children. This includes encouraging them to challenge themselves, learn from mistakes and never give up. We will also be building on formative assessment practices from last year. In line with this we will be working with students to set their own educational learning goals. These will be across a variety of areas, and not necessarily solely in the academic arena. We will assist students in setting small, achievable goals – ones that can be achieved within 3 weeks to a month. This is a great area for you to generate discussions with children about their learning, by asking them what their goals are and how they are achieving them. 


Parents and grandparents are most welcome to help in the classroom, canteen or with excursions. Volunteer helpers for the classroom will commence once classes have settled into their new routines.


  • A teacher is on duty from 8.30am.
  • Students are to make their way to the classroom and leave their bags outside the classroom and move to the back playground (where the duty teacher is) until the 8.55 a.m. bell goes. If the grounds are wet, the front playground or COLA will be used. The verandahs should be kept clear and all students should be in the playground with the duty teacher. Please try and get to school before the 8.55am bell. This enables your child to start class calmly with the other children and it also establishes good habits early. 
  • Money collection - Please send money in an envelope with the child’s name, class, amount and what the money is for, clearly visible on the front. Please let your child know when they have money to be handed in, or ask them to put it in the money collection box in the office area.
  • Lunch – if ordering this must be done before school at the canteen. Orders need to be written on a paper bag, clearly marked with the child’s name and class.  Recess can be ordered this way also.
  • Crunch and Sip – this has been implemented into the school to allow children to have a small snack of fruit or vegetables and a drink of water during the morning session. Please provide a small piece of fruit or vegetables that is easily managed within a ten-minute timeframe. A drink bottle with water is allowed during this time. Fruit sticks, yoghurt and juice are not suitable at this time. For recess, a small piece of fruit or snack is sufficient and a sandwich and a small snack and a drink, preferably water, are ideal for lunch. If you send snacks please ensure your child is able to open them. Canned foods are to be discouraged due to safety issues.
  • Hats – We have a “No hat, stay in the shade” policy.
  • Absences – A note is required when your child is absent from school. This is a legal requirement and should be sent in on the day that the child returns to school stating the reason for the absence. If you are planning a holiday during school term, then you need to go to the office to fill out an exemption from school form.
  • Early Leavers/Late Arrivers – When your child is late for school or when it is necessary for your child to leave early, you need to go to the office and fill a late arrivers or an early leavers slip which will then be passed on to the class teacher.
  • School newsletter – We will send home newsletters fortnightly. This will keep you informed on events and up to date on things happening in the classroom.
  • News - Each child has their own news day. We would encourage you to help your child prepare their news item and select something suitable to share. These topics may relate to the unit of work we are covering at that time.
  • Home reading - The children will need a document folder to keep their home reading record book and home reader in. The home reading record book is to be completed each night that the child reads. The children need to bring their home reading folder to school everyday as we will be using these folders to bring things to and from school. All children will take home easy books or books that we have read in class together.  Encourage children to talk about the story and ask questions regarding what happened in the story.


Developing Independence

It is important that we work together to encourage your children to develop independence. Try to resist doing everything for your child. Give them some responsibilities and encourage them to do things such as dressing themselves and putting things into their bag. You will probably need to give them some assistance at first, but gradually they can be encouraged to take responsibility.

PLEASE LABEL ALL OF YOUR CHILD’S BELONGINGS. School bags also need name tags.

Awards & Discipline

  • Two orange certificates are given each Wednesday in assembly. All children will get a turn at receiving these. They are awarded for special achievements in the classroom. The yellow behaviour certificates are awarded for good behaviour in the classroom. The students collect all orange and yellow awards, which can accumulate to receive further school awards (refer to the school discipline policy). At the class level the children are given lots of encouragement and praise to always try their best.
  • Notifications form - is sent home if a child is having difficulty following school rules. This is to let you know that your child has been disciplined at school and that this incident has been recorded on the school data-base. It is expected that parents discuss the incident and encourage their child to follow the rules and reinforce the code of behaviour.
  • Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) – this is a school wide initiative linking our school values to student behavior, where children receive ‘Wani Winner’ tokens for positive behaviour in the playground. When they reach 30 ‘Wani Winners’, they receive a PBL award at the whole school assembly. Last year it was implemented into the classroom and is represented by dojo’s or classroom winners chart.
